Animal books (Booking Through Thursday)

I was looking for blogging memes and came across one dedicated entirely to books. This one being a reading blog, I had to go ahead and start doing it.

So here is my first Booking Through Thursday. Today’s question:

Since my dog is turning 10 today … what animal-related books have you read? Which do you love? Do you have a favorite literary dog? (Snoopy, anyone?)

I come from South America where there’s a very large fable culture. One of the first fable and animal books I read was Cuentos de la Selva (Jungle Tales) by Horacio Quiroga when I was about 6 or 7. My parents had already read the whole book to me when I was younger, and it was indeed one of my favourites growing up. To this day I can still remember most of the stories, especially Las medias de los flamencos.

Another animal story that stuck in my mind is The Nightingale and The Rose by Oscar Wilde. This is a story my dad read aloud to me while sitting in bed with my mum as a bed story (a bit of an odd choice I have to say). I remember how sad I was about the nightingale. I think is is the time when love and loss became connected and I truly understood their significance.

As for dogs, I can’t really remember a book with a dog as a main character that drew my attention. I like Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, and there Ian Murray (Jamie’s cousin) has a wolf-dog called Rollo that makes some of the best sections of the book (at least some of the funniest.
